Agawam Finance Committee Approves $91,700 Grant for Fire Department Mobile Radios
Finance Committee · Meeting of August 3, 2026
Agawam Finance Committee unanimously backs $91,700 state grant for fire department radios. The committee voted 5-0 at its August 3 meeting to give a positive evaluation to a resolution accepting a Massachusetts Gaming Commission grant of $91,700, authorized under MGL Chapter 44, Section 53A and sponsored by the Mayor, to purchase approximately 10 mobile radios from Motorola Solutions for front-line fire apparatus. The Fire Chief told the committee the new units can operate across the frequencies used by surrounding communities, closing a mutual aid communication gap the current fleet cannot address without costly upgrades.
Councilor Sandlin asked about delivery; the Chief estimated roughly six months from award. The committee's Chair framed the vote in terms of department readiness: "If you want a top flight department, you've got to give them the proper equipment." The resolution now moves to the full City Council for formal action.
