Board of Health advances Pioneer Valley Mosquito Control membership bid

AGAWAM — Board of Health votes to pursue Pioneer Valley Mosquito Control District membership. The Board unanimously authorized development of a letter of recommendation to the Mayor and City Council following a presentation by PVMCD Director John Briggs on the District's surveillance, mitigation, and education services for mosquito-borne disease. Annual membership costs $5,250 plus per-catch-basin and per-acre treatment fees.
The region saw 53 West Nile positive pools this season, unprecedented levels. Health Nurse Pam Sheridan reported Agawam has recorded 207 confirmed lab-reported influenza cases from December 1 through January 8, with the dominant strain Type A H3N2.
