School Committee Rejects Immigration Policy, 5-2
Agawam School Committee splits 5-2 against a new federal civil-enforcement policy for schools.
School Committee · Meeting of September 29, 2026
Agawam School Committee splits 5-2 against a new federal civil-enforcement policy for schools. Member Michael Perry called the state-driven mandate political, citing just 17 national incidents of federal law enforcement on school property in nearly two years, and said it would force staff to "obstruct federal law enforcement carrying out their duties." Member Shelley Reed agreed, calling it "completely political." Member Wendy Rua and Chair Christopher C. Johnson, who clarified the rule covers only civil, not criminal, enforcement, cast the two yes votes.
In a separate 0-7 vote, the committee kept Agawam High School's 2027 graduation at Symphony Hall on June 12 rather than shifting it to June 6. The committee also approved a $6,000 golf booster donation, a $1,050 volleyball booster donation, and warrants including $3,555,620.74 in payroll.
